After my little experiment yesterday with improvisation over Erik Satie’s Gymnopedie No 1 I was inspired to create another recording using Gnossienne No 1.
Satie’s minimalistic harmonic structure creates an environment that isn’t too different in nature from the modal jazz styles that were being explored 40 years after his death. The harmony in this piece allowed me to play with some different ideas, for example imitating the vocal style of Indian classical music, or an Islamic call to prayer. In this recording I have tried to follow Satie’s habitual lack of thematic development, but it is pretty difficult to shake off the habits of at least trying to be interesting when I play!
I hope you enjoy this music, please leave your comments and check back for further additions to the Satie Project.
